Councillor Jim Shrimplin, Over 60 Years of Public Service

Councillor Jim Shrimplin was given the freedom of the Parish (Ormesby St Margaret with Scratby Parish Council) for over 60 years service on Parish, County and Borough Councils.

Jim, at the age of 17 in 1950, joined the young conservatives,

During 1951-56 he was a member of the armed forces (Air Force).

From 1958 until the present day he has been a councillor for Ormesby St Margaret with Scratby Parish Council.

Between 1977-78 He was elected to the Borough Council, representing the West Flegg Ward until 1982 when he was elected to the East Flegg Ward.

Jim has served on most of the many County and Borough Council Committees when in 1988-89 he became Mayor of Great Yarmouth Borough Council. In 1989-1990 he resigned as Deputy Mayor in protest to a Labour motion to dissolve the role of Mayor.

As Mayor, Jim met various members of the Royal family including the now King Charles 111 when he was Prince of Wales, Prince Phillip, Sarah Ferguson (Duchess of York) and Princess Alexandra, he attended numerous garden parties and events at Buckingham Palace and Sandringham.

He represented the Borough Council in the USA, in Yarmouth Cape Cod to celebrate 375 years of the founding of the town, during which, he made T.V appearances, public speaking and attending celebrations and functions in the USA.

Jim, born in Ormesby in 1933, has family roots in the village dating back hundreds of years.
